My Perfect Day in Seattle

by Emily Taibl, age 31

When I think about the perfect day in Seattle, it just wouldn’t be complete without my constant companion – my dog, Gibson! So I decided to plan the day around all things pup-friendly, and fortunately there is quite a bit of it in Seattle.

First things first in Seattle…and that means coffee. My day starts with a nice cup o’ Joe at Uptown Espresso. The self-proclaimed “Home of the Velvet Foam” is, in my opinion, Seattle in a cup. With made-from-scratch pastries, rich coffee, and truly the smoothest, creamiest foam you will ever enjoy, Uptown Espresso is just what I need to start the day. And they’ve got eight locations around Seattle so it’s easy to find one nearby!

Next, it’s off to get some exercise. Gibson and I love to spend time at Green Lake, which truly is one of Seattle’s most beloved parks. This natural reserve creates a sense of being in nature, while at the same time maintains a cool, urban vibe. The 2.8-mile trail around the lake is the perfect morning walk for my furry friend and I – with lots of fun people and dog watching to keep us both entertained.

With Gibson feeling treated, it’s off to indulge myself and that means Po’ Dogs Gourmet Hot Dogs in Capitol Hill and Ballard. With a variety of specialty dogs to choose from (including my personal fave the Deep Fried Danger Dog, wrapped in pepper bacon & deep-fried – topped with spicy chili sauce & sautéed onion) there is something for everyone – even a Veggie Dog for vegetarians!

Hold on to your hot dogs! Next I am taking Gibson to new heights — literally. We’re off to see the city from the top, with a tour by Kenmore Air. These guys allow dogs on their flights – in your lap, or in a seat if the flight is not full. So we’re off on a seaplane to see the city from above. This 20-minute sight-seeing adventure is a great way to take in everything from the mountains to the Sound (and a great view of the Space Needle) with an exciting water take-off, and gentle water-landing to round it out.

With both of us feeling invigorated it’s time for a little shopping, and there’s no better place to get your fix than University Village. This outdoor shopper’s paradise features over a hundred stores and restaurants – with plenty of opportunities to socialize with other canine shoppers. While there, pamper your pooch at Washington’s own MudBay. This family owned pet store features a variety of healthy food, treats, and accessories for your four-legged companion.

The final piece of my perfect day would be dinner at Local 360. Though dogs aren’t allowed inside, they can be hooked up in the adjacent park. 90% of Local 360’s ingredients are sourced within a 360-mile radius, so it’s a great spot to sample what Seattle has to offer. Located in the heart of Belltown, and serving the largest selection of locally sourced spirits in Washington state, this modern American comfort food is a definite treat for me. Yum.

Aaahhh…With my metaphoric dogs barking, and my real pooch pretty pooped, it’s off to settle in for the night. Welcome to the Alexis Hotel. With no weight or size restrictions, and no extra charge, your pup can call it a day in style with relaxing amenities, including his own treats, food and water bowls, and a designer dog bed for the length of your stay. Now that is something to wag your tail about!
